Basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education professor and instructor at the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School (YMCA) in Massachusetts, USA in 1891, while he was trying to keep his gym class active on cold days, when outdoor activities were impossible. The world’s first basketball game was played on January 20, 1892 at the YMCA in Springfield. In its earliest forms, one peach basket was nailed at 10-foot (3.05 m) high on both sides of the gym. Peach baskets were used because Springfield was abounds in peaches, and hence the name “basket” ball. Basketball instantly became one of the main sports activities in schools, since students can be trained in running, jumping, throwing, turning, and stopping moves which exercise the whole body. Hand-eye coordination can be enhanced, as can be teamwork among players in a team.
