When it comes to basketball, it all comes down just tokeep on going whatever happens. You may miss one shot or two, but if you just hold on maybe you may get opportunities to score out of nowhere. It’s a matter of giving everything and then a bit more!
It was a fresh day at the SLUG 2016, 5th of September 2016 being held at the Wayamba university premises. 11 teams each from men’s and women’s battled it out on the first day for a place in the quarters. The matches were held till late night but there were plenty of spectators to be found as the matches being nail-biting performances.
In the preliminary stage each team had the opportunity to play two matches each and at the end of the first round Universities of Sabaragamuwa, Peradeniya, Jayewardenepura, Eastern, Colombo, Moratuwa, Jaffna and Kelaniya from the men’s category and the same teams with the exception of Moratuwa(instead Uva) in the Women’s category were selected to the quarter final stage based on the performances. It came as a surprise to many, when women team of Moratuwa had to return home from the group stage itself.
The real showdown came when it was time for quarter finals. The usual tell tellers of pressure being forced on teams were highlighted when the odd ball resulted in air shots n plenty of line faults. The men’s matches were mostly one-sided where the better team thrashed its opponent soundly. But it was far from the same when it came to women. Three close games where the winning margin was less than 5 points were evident. Ultimately Universities of Jayewardenepura, Uva, Colombo and Kelaniya registered wins to go through to the semifinals.
The men’s matches seemed one sided from point perspective, but lads from both ends gave their everything to win. Some teams used defensive tactics while others came full on attacking. As an example, in the quarterfinal between Colombo and Eastern, The first basket was scored after just 3 seconds of game play!! Such was the ferocity of the players that they won the match with a margin of 24 points.
Semifinal matches and Final matches are scheduled for play today (7/09/2016) with Universities Sabaragamuwa, Colombo, Moratuwa and powerhouse Jayewardenepura in the men’s category and the before mentioned teams in the women’s category. The way last two days have proceeded, it is expected to see some ferocious battle between these 8 teams for sure.
