Opinions are widely divided on the origin of tennis. Historians believe that the game’s ancient origin lay in the French imperial court. English academicians argue that the sport originated in the U.K. more than four centuries ago. Chinese and Japanese scholars maintain that tennis began in the 16th century in Ming dynasty, where shuttlecocks served as ball, and a plank of wood as racquet.
Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Paris houses an archive of ancient documents from the 16th and 17th century, salvaged from the hands of the mob, hell-bent on burning down the monasteries and abbeys. Some of the historic documents were hand-drawn paintings depicting kings, their queens and ladies-in-waiting, frolicking with whimsically invented short-handle racquets in the lap of imperial luxury. The game depicted is believed to be the predecessor of tennis; the painting also explained why tennis was considered a game of the royalty.
